Information
Worldscan Intelligence Services, Ltd maintains facilities in Florida and Palatine, Illinois, near Chicago. The firm was incorporated in Illinois in 1994 by Scott Champion, Sarah Mayer, Avril Webster, and Steven Webster. Michael Glazier became a partner in 1996.
In 1998, Worldscan was acquired by WhizzO AdverT. Co., a Florida firm founded by the Websters. Corporate offices were moved from Chicago's Northwest Tower Building in the historic and trendy Wicker Park neighborhood to Merritt Island, Florida, adjacent to the Kennedy Space Center on Florida's East Coast. Orlando International Airport is a convenient 45-minute journey.
Steven Webster, previously Group Creative and Account Director at Ogilvy & Mather, has served as President and CEO of WhizzO AdverT. Co and its predecessor, Creative Marketing Management, since 1991. (The "WhizzO" name derives from his long-time fascination with Monty Python's Flying Circus. One of the names the comedy troupe considered was "WhizzO Comedy Hour.")

Accomplishments
Corporate-sponsored sports events and stadiums are run-of-the-mill these days. But until Jim Beam Distillers changed the name of the former Spiral Stakes pre-Derby horse race to the Jim Beam Stakes, media would routinely avoid mentioning the corporate sponsor. Once Worldscan's CEO took over media relations, even the choleric New York Times gave in and referred to the Jim Beam Stakes by its new name.
We reintroduced syndicated sports radio programming with the hugely successful "Consort Sports Report with Gary Fencik." The Chicago Bear safety's show revitalized a tried-and-true concept: the sponsored broadcast program. Alberto-Culver's show (Consort is Culver's men's grooming products line) was made possible by changes in FCC commercial rules, which Worldscan staff successfully exploited.
Strategic and affinity marketing relationships are standard operating procedure today. They were unheard of 20 years ago when we developed one of the very first: a union between pet food giant Kal Kan and the American Animal Hospital Association, the nation's largest association of companion animal veterinarians. Kal Kan funded a series of AAHA public service announcements. It was AAHA's first venture into television, and Kal Kan's most successful appeal to this key product purchase-initiating audience. (Pet owners buy what the vet recommends!)
Accomplishments
Steven Webster coined the term guerrilla marketing with his savvy and successful launch program for McKids, a childrens' clothing joint venture between McDonald's and Sears. The stand-alone stores were sited in urban -- well, yuppieland. Rather than waste his client's budget on high-cost newspaper and TV, he negotiated contracts to drape McKids Store banners from streetlights on the blocks surrounding stores. Coupled with other "guerrilla" tactics, the store launches were huge -- and inexpensive -- successes.
The ne plus ultra of event marketing took place during the years-long rollout of Brand Central, the former Sears appliance department. When Sears decided to push home electronics and brand names, we created a true marvel to prove that Sears now meant much more than appliances: a 16-ton truck equipped with stadium seating, a monster sound system, and a four-color laser that projected a custom Brand Central light show. Brand Central Laser One performed hundreds of shows at dozens of cities. With each performance, Brand Central set a new store sales record. Brand Central remains the largest home appliance/home electronics seller in the US.Laser One still tours for other clients.
Accomplishments
Name a career highlight? Linking up Bob Vila and Craftsman. We pursued the idea for years, finally succeeding in 1990, when Bob's "Home Again" premiered as a syndicated TV show sponsored by Sears. (And it's taken another decade for Sears to start using Bob as an in-store draw.) We even found Bob the house he rehabbed in Chicago's Wicker Park neighborhood.
We've written hundreds of press releases. Personal favorites: our paean to Western Publishing's one billionth Golden Book, which landed on the front page of major papers like the Chicago Sun-Times, and a fear-provoking dispatch on the bufo marinus toad. While managing a veterinary conference in Orlando, we learned the toads, whose poison can kill smaller pets, had hopped their way from Miami right to the southern outskirts of Orlando. A sensationalized press release had sensational results: Orlando media -- well, got all hopped up. The story played for several days, then peaked after an Orlando resident phoned a local TV station to report that one of the frogs was in his front yard! The vets loved it. ... back to beginning (quite a story, isn't it?)

What happens when you know the internet from A to Z? In Steven Webster's case, you write and then star in one of the first-ever internet how-to videos in a joint venture with Concentric Corporation. "Internet A to Z" sold thousands of copies via a direct response TV campaign he co-wrote.
While live radio remotes are perhaps a dime a dozen (we have arranged over 400 of them), one of the lesser known benefits of local market radio promotions is all the free stuff radio stations pass on to their clients. On one occasion, our staff received four Rolling Stones tickets from a grateful station. We arranged a one-day raffle at a Chicago men's clothing store. The event sparked a single day sales record at the store, proving once again that the best things in life are free!
Our CEO's innovative use of cash register tape as an in-store promotional medium turned an otherwise humdrum test of a loyalty program into an Atlanta area media event. A complicated customer reward program required customers to redeem receipts to get free stuff. Steven changed the words printed on store receipts from "Thank you for shopping at Sears" to "Redeem this receipt for free prizes!" Simple, yet wildly effective.
